Young Child Appreciation Week

Last week was Week of the Young Child at Rory's school.  This is actually kind of a real thing.  Its sponsored by NAEYC which is the organization that accredits Rory's school.  The purpose is to focus attention on the needs of young children and their parents and teachers.

The directors did a good job of planning a fun filled week.  Monday was sports apparel day, which lets face it is nothing special for Rory.  She wears sports apparel all the time.  But we sent her in her Yankee's dress.

Tuesday was teacher appreciation day which was a great opportunity for us to let our teacher's know how much we love them.  We gave them all Amazon gift cards.  We couldn't be happier with them and we know they just love Rory so we were excited to do something special for them.   Rory wore super cute cat pajamas and brought her favorite bedtime story "You are My Cupcake."

Wednesday was Wacky Wednesday and I got to dress Rory in a crazy mismatched outfit!  It was also parent appreciation day and they had breakfast for us.  The two different socks is my favorite part.

Thursday was bring your favorite stuffed animal to school day.  This was a tough one for me.  I wanted to send Smoochalito the frog but he was mine as a kid (more like teenager, but whatever) so I couldn't bear the though of something happening to him.  Selfish Mom, I know.  So I sent her with her second favorite, her doggie.

Friday was rockstar day.  Rory really got into this role!

The teachers dressed up each day too so it was fun to see them dressed all silly and having fun.  It was a fun week for everyone!

Now, here's to hoping that this week I can finally dress her in all the summer outfits I got her!

It's Not All Smiles

It may seem like Rory is always smiling based on the photos that I post on Facebook and on this blog.  And overall Rory really is a very happy baby.  But she has her moments where she cries.  Usually its because she is tired.  Everything else she kind of just lets roll off her back.

From the moment Rory was born she made the cutest facial expression when she cried.  It may make me a horrible Mom, but I just had to capture it and share it with the world.

I just can't help it, that face is just hysterical!  And yet so cute!  But so sad!  Here is after I calmed her down, probably less then a minute later. It was about 7pm, time to get ready for bed.

Look at those crocodile tears!  She has had them since birth.

PS - is my daughter really going to have blue eyes?  I just can't believe it!

Sleep Crawling

We all know what sleep walking is, but do you know anything about sleep crawling?  This is a totally new concept to me.  But we are in full swing of a sleep crawling stage.

It amazes me so much that when babies are working on milestones they actually wake in the middle of the night because they are working so hard on rolling over, sitting up, crawling, talking or whatever it may be.

When Rory was learning how to roll over we went through a period of about a week where she would wake in the middle of the night and fuss and try to roll over.  Then she would get upset and frustrated and fussing would turn into full blown crying.  We are experiencing this same thing again this week with crawling.

Rory actually crawls across her crib in the middle of the night and then gets upset when she reaches the end and has no place more to go.  She cries and will not self soothe herself back to sleep.  For the past 3 nights its been pretty close to the same routine:

7:30 - Bedtime
12:00 - Crawl across crib
12:02 - Get upset that there is nowhere else to crawl
12:10 - Get increasingly upset
12:15 - Get comforted by Mommy or Daddy
12:20 - Fall back asleep
12:25 - Try to crawl
12:26 - Get upset that there is nowhere else to crawl.

You get the idea.  She eventually takes a bottle and some more comforting and goes back to sleep before 1am.  Then sleeps till her normal 1st bottle time of 5:30am.

She only wakes about one extra time a night but its definitely throwing off sleep routines for all 3 of us - well, probably all 4 of us since Willow gets up in the middle of the night to see what all the fuss is about.

Rory hasn't really crawled during the light of the day yet, only secretively in her sleep.  I think its coming pretty soon though.  She can pull her knees in and get up on all 4's and rock back and forth.  She then falls forward which makes her move about 1 in.  Then repeats.  Not the best method of movement.

I'll try to take a pic tonight of her up on all 4's, its pretty cute!

UPDATE: Here's a pic that I promised.  She's a Bears fan despite her outfit!

StuPop and Laura Visit!

Last weekend we had more visitors!  We love visitors!  It makes me a little sad that Rory is so far away from her family.  She doesn’t get to spend much time with her Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles or Cousins.  So when we get visitors I want her (and me) to soak up every minute of it.

I justify the distance by saying that when we do see family we get to spend more quality time with them.  This is true.  When you live down the street from your parents, when do you really spend a whole weekend with them?

My Dad and Laura came for the weekend and we had a great time.  They drove in on Friday and the 5 of us went to Buca Di Beppo for dinner.  Buca is great because it’s a somewhat nice restaurant where we can actually bring Rory and not feel bad if she screams or cries.

Saturday Rory and I went downtown with my Dad and Laura.  We had a fantastic lunch at The News Room.  I had a great beet and goat cheese salad, which is one of may favorites.  Rory was great; she was in a cute denim dress with a sun hat.  It was nearly 80 degrees out.  This was the first time I ever put sunscreen on her too.  She has a lifetime of high SPF sunscreen ahead of her!  She has such fair skin.

We spent the day walking the city.  We pretty much walked from the Target on Nicollet to Loring Park then back to Target on Hennepin.  It felt like we walked the entire city and I would have sworn it was like a 3 mile walk but I just put it on Map My Run and it was only 1.7 miles.

After walking around we treated ourselves to cupcakes at Cupcake near the U.  So yummy!  I had a Mexican Hot Chocolate Cupcake.  It was so good!

Sunday we went to B.A.N.K. for brunch.  Rory again was a good sport even though she was missing her morning nap.  She got to spend some more time with StuPop and Laura.

Overall it was a really fun weekend!  I loved seeing my Dad and Laura, and love that they got to spend some quality time with Rory!

Better Sleeping Habits and Cupcakes

I think Rory is in a transition phase.  She is breaking all of her routines lately.  And becoming very unpredictable on when she will eat and how much and when she will sleep.

She used to take 5 bottles a day and 3oz overnight.  She used to go to sleep at 7:30pm wake at 3:30 and then sleep until 6:30. I didn’t really mind this schedule, getting up once in the middle of the night is a vast improvement from a couple of months ago.

So this past week Rory has taken 4 bottles some days and 5 others.  She’s eating more food during the day.  And she goes to bed at 7:30 and wakes up between 4:30 and 5:00 and then goes back to sleep till 7:30!  Yes, 7:30.  Most mornings we have to wake her up to get her ready for school.  This is exciting!

One thing I can’t figure out, is how to avoid crabby Rory after school.  She generally takes 2-3 naps at school totaling anywhere from 2-4 hours.  Whether its 2 hours or 4 hours total, about an hour after she gets home she gets crabby.  Usually I’ll let her sleep on me for about 30 minutes and then she’ll be fine the rest of the night.  But I wish there was a better solution, letting her take naps on us is probably not a good habit to still be in.  All other naps she takes in a crib unless we are out of the house.  I make and exception for this one because I read that the third nap of the day can be a moving/cuddling nap.

On a totally unrelated note, I have been trying to make cupcakes from scratch for about a month now.  The first batch I made with Loni and they were awful.  The second batch the paper stuck to the outside and the chocolate chips sunk to the bottom and they were not edible.  The third batch tasted funny.  But, yesterday I made my 4th batch and they are so good!  I am so excited!  I even got rave reviews from my biggest critic in the kitchen (yep, Tim).

They are Snickerdoodle Cupcakes with Peanut Butter frosting!  Here’s the recipe I used (adapted from Martha Stewart's recipe)

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½  tablespoon baking powder
  • ¼  teaspoon salt
  • ½  tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • ½  cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • ¾  cups sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • ½ cup + 2 tablespoons milk

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line standard muffin tins with paper liners. Sift together both flours, baking powder, salt, and 1 tablespoon cinnamon.
  2. With an electric mixer on medium-high speed, cream butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating until each is incorporated, scraping down sides of bowl as needed. Beat in vanilla. Reduce speed to low. Add flour mixture in three batches, alternating with two additions of milk, and beating until combined after each.
  3. Divide batter evenly among lined cups, filling each three-quarters full. Bake, rotating tins halfway through, until a cake tester inserted in centers comes out clean, about 22 minutes.
Frosting – Kind of winged it
Powdered Sugar
Skim Milk
Butter (unsalted)
Peanut Butter

My frosting skills could use some work... but here they are!

Rory's First Easter

This weekend was Rory's first Easter!  Sunday we went to a super early Mass.  We actually had to wake Rory up at 6:30am which is pretty rare.  Normally she wakes us up in the morning.  She got to wear a super pretty dress.  I was so excited to get to church and see all of the other pretty little dresses.  Maybe it was the weather, but I was pretty disappointed at the general dress of the crowd.  Lots of dark colors and not a lot of dresses.  There was however no shortage of way too short skirts on way too young girls.  (Sorry Rory, but daddy is never ever going to let you leave the house like that when your older)

We sat in the crying room.  Which is new to me.  I don't think they have this concept at Temples, but then again I went to to Temple growing up at the High School so what do I know.  Its a pretty sweet set up at Tim's church though.  Its 4 rows in the back with a perfect view in a sound proof room.  There's plently of room to lay out a blanket and let Rory play on the floor and there is a bathroom with a changing table.  Rory did really well.  This was really her first time at church.  She started to get a little upset in the last 10 minutes when she was getting tired and her Tylenol (teething) was starting to wear off.

After Church we had a little time to kill before brunch so we went home.  Rory was exhausted but there wasn't really enough time to put her down for a nap.  We left the house again and headed to brunch at Birch's in Wayzata.  Its a small little place.  They had a fantastic brunch set up.  All the normal stuff and then cerviche, mussels, prime rib, tilapia.  It was good.  Rory was so good.  She ate some pears and enjoyed sitting at the table and playing with the paper table cloth.

Of course when we got home from brunch Rory was read for a nap.  I put her down at 11:30 and she slept till 2:30.  That is a super long nap!

Next Rory got to watch the Master's with us and look for her Easter basket.  I did not realize the tradition was to hide the Easter basket and kids had to find it.  Much better reward then when you find the Afikoman!  In my family we only got $5 for finding the Afikoman, Rory got a basket full of candy, toys and teethers.

To add to our great day, the Master's was a great compelling ending.  And my 2 favorite golfers (Bubba and Poults) were both in it almost to the end.  Bubba Watson won, I am so pumped!

After Rory went to sleep, I made Easter dinner.  Ham, potatoes, green beans and corn bread.  It was pretty good.  I am getting much closer to replicating my Meme's potatoes.

Overall, we had a fun day.  Hope everyone else's was great too.  Happy Easter and Happy Passover!

Aunt Marybeth Visits!

I am so glad that we live in a bustling corporate area so that our friends and family can have work trips to Minneapolis!  Marybeth was here for work and got to visit us for a couple hours on Wed.  Although it was too short it was great to see her and I am glad that Rory could have a few hours with her Aunt.

Rory also got 2 brand new Auntie shirts!  We were running low on Auntie shirts so we are very excited.

Like a pro, Marybeth also confirmed that Rory is officially teething.  They played and laughed and had a good time!

Silly Outfits

I have very little sense of style, but I honestly thought this was the cutest outfit!  mini-photo shoot worthy!  Tim did not agree, he thought she looked ridiculous!  Yes, those are leg warmers.  I heart them!
