Rory's Birthday Party - Post 3: The Shenanigans

It took me a little longer then planned to get this last post written.  Things have been a little busy at work and I have been spending every free moment with Rory or running!  Tim and I are actually making an attempt to stay current with the X Factor and the Voice too.

In addition to the actual birthday party on last Saturday, the whole weekend was such a blast so I wanted to share some of the other Shenanigans that went down.

Friday night we went to Butcher and the Boar - we being my Mom, Michael, Auntie Pam, and Loni.  Butcher in the Boar is by far my new favorite restuarant.  I just love their food.  I ate so much. I split an order of oysters with Michael.  They were cooked which I thought was a little weird by they were delic.  I also got to try the Shrimp Cocktail and I would definitley order that again.  It was spicy and citrusy, so yummy.  I had the stuffed jalenpenos again.  They are stuffed with peanut butter and they are fantastic.  And Michael and I split the sausage platter.  So good.  Tim would really love this place.  We have to plan a date there!

It was a fun night.  I got to catch up with my Aunt and spend time with my rents and Loni.  What more could I ask for!

Saturday after the party we all went to Rosa Mexicana for dinner.  I was a little worried how this would all work out but they had a great table for us and the food was really good.  I had the scallop and potato tacos.  yum!

After dinner, Tim took Rory back to the hotel to meet up with Miss Amanda.  Rory was so excited to see her, there was no chance she was going to sleep.  Especially with both Tim and Miss Amanda there.  So Tim left and met us at Shout House and let Miss Amanda put Rors to bed.  She said she had to lay in bed next to her for her to go to sleep and then transferred her to her Pack and Play.  Not surprised, she did the same thing for us.  Rory didn't wake up and Miss Amanda got a ton of homework down, win/win!

I was excited for my Mom to experience The Shout House.  She is a show tunes kind of person and I thought she would love it!  And she did!  My Dad and Laura also had never been and loved it.  I wouldn't be surprised if they were at Howl at the Moon in Chicago very soon!  Everyone sang along and had fun!  There were a few awkward moments when the bar back stipped to his tighty whiteys dancing on some bachelorette but that goes with the territory!  And guess who showed up... Mackenzie and Mike with some friends!  It made for an even better night.  Loni, Dan and I were the winners of  "out latest."  We stumbled back to the hotel and parted ways as they went searching for the vending machine.  Great night!  Here's some pics!

1 Year Check Up

I can't beleive Rory is one already!  Tuesday I took her in for her 1 year check up.  I was excited to see how she was doing and get her stats.  Below are her measurements.

Height 30 Inches - 78%
Weight 26.4 lbs - 98%
Head 18.5 inch - 85%

Needless to say, she is a large baby.  Not fat, just really big.  I couldn't be prouder!  The doctor seemed t think that once she is off formula and walking she will slim down.  It seems like she is going to be tall though!  Which is fantastic, I would love for her to be taller then me.  I feel short at 5'4''.

I don't want to brag.  And I am not the type of mom that thinks my daughter is the smartest or anything like that.  But I will brag about one thing.  Dr. Schaefer said that Rory makes fantastic car noises!  She was playing with a truck on the floor and vroom vrooming.  Again, I could not be prouder!

The next couple months should be fun.  They said to expect Rory to understand more and more.  She should be able to do things like "Go get me that diaper", etc.  She'll also should be walking before her 15 month appointment.  Although, my guess is it will be somewhere between 13 and 14 months.  She is cruising now pretty good but hasn't really started standing on her own yet or experimenting with letting go of furniture.

The Dr. also told us to get her off formula.  Which if you recall I tried once before with bad results.  She thinks the either it was a coincidence or Rory may be only able to tolerate so much milk.  So we have to find that magic number and then can fill in the rest with soy milk.  She only needs 12-16 ounces of milk a day to get the Vitamin D and Calcium she needs to that should be pretty easy to get to with a combo of milk and soy.

Rory also had 5 (Yep Five!) shots!  She did great though, she screamed for about 2 minutes and then went back to playing with her truck!

Rory's Birthday Party - Post 2: Smash Cake!

This post doesnt require a lot of words.  Let's just say that Rory started out eating her cake slowly and slowly progressed to fist fulls.  You'll see below.  She stayed pretty clean and ate with one hand the whole time!  My dad has a video I hope to post soon.

Rory's Birthday Party - Post 1

I am going to break up Rory’s Birthday Weekend Extravaganza into a couple of posts.  It’s just too much to fit into one.  So let's first set the scene...

I was on the fence for a long time about doing a Dr. Seuss themed party.  Rory’s room is Dr. Seuss and I felt a little suffocated in the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss.  But after going through some other ideas I decided to compromise with myself and do a Cat in the Hat theme.  Not much of a compromise I know.

Each month I took Rory’s picture with her Cat in the Hat stuffed animal so it seemed to make sense to go for that theme.

I made an awesome poster of Rory’s monthly photos.  Please don’t ask where 1 & 8 are.

We also had a huge Cat in the Hat cut out and black, red and white balloons.

I decorated the tables with Cat in the Hat napkins and Hats.

We had really good food catered from the Graves 601 Hotel.  We had mini burgers, chicken finger bar and french fry bar.  Adults and Kids all seemed very happy with the choices!  (Christine Husted especially!)  And to top it all off we had the most amazing cake ever.  Not only does it look incredible, but is was so good too.  Thank you to Sweet Retreat, we will be ordering from them again.

I ordered a Tutu and a shirt with ONE on it from Etsy.  I wanted the Birthday Girl to really stand out, and boy did she.  The tutu was huge!  It was perfect!

We had a ball pit and a tunnel for the kids to play in which worked out great!  I think we are going to put the ball pit in our basement for a while.  Rory just loved it!

Overall, everything came together fantastic!  I think everyone had a great time.  More to come on Smash Cake eating and the rest of the weekend's Shenanigans!

Coloring

Ok, this might sound a little weird.  But I am so excited for when Rory starts to color in coloring books.  I think it will be so much fun to sit down with her at the table and color too!  I love crayons and colored pencils and all that fun stuff.

Right now we are just working on holding the crayons, not eating them, not dropping them on the floor, and coloring on the paper.  You can see how all of that is going below!

PS - these photos are with my sweet new Nikon D3100.  I am still getting the hang of it, but it takes pretty great photos!

Da Bears

So obviously you know we are sports fanatics in this house.  But football season is a whole other story for me.  I am a doesn't miss a game Bears fan! And I fully expect Rory to be a Bears fan too, even in Viking country!

We have been working on Rory saying Da Bears since the beginning of the pre-season.  She says Da just fine but has a little trouble saying Bears.  It sounds more like Baaaa.  And she whispers Baaaa for some reason.  DA baaaa.  She'll be saying it by the end of the regular season.

We also are working on the sign for touchdown.  She just laughs at how silly I look with my arms in the air.

Sunday Rory and I watched the Bears game together, as I expect we will do every Sunday.  I even moved her high chair in front of the TV while she ate lunch so she didn't have to miss any of the game.

Unfortunately nap time came right at the beginning of the 4th quarter, but I don't think Rory minded because we had a 20 point lead.  She wasn't worried at all and fell right asleep!

I admit that I was also very confident with our lead and turned on the end of the golf.  Guess who won the 3rd playoff event.  Yep, Rory McIlroy.  A definite favorite golfer in our house, for obvious reasons!

Run, Run, Run!

Training is going so well!  I am 5.5 weeks in and I have stuck to my schedule like a pro.  My runs are getting easier and easier.  Each week I am so excited for my long run on Saturdays.

Saturdays have been really fun too.  Mackenzie and I have tried to run our long runs together and it has not only given me motivation to get up early and get it done, but its made it way more fun.  Last week we shared stroller pushing for our 4 mile run.  I loved it, when she was pushing I felt so free!  I flailed my arms like an idiot for a few seconds just to emphasize the awesome feeling!  Of course Rory stayed awake for 3.75 miles and then fell asleep.  Typical.

I am so pumped to run 5 miles in another week.  Thats going to be a big milestone.

I remember the first time that I ran 5 miles.  Nikki was visiting me and she was training for her first half marathon and that Saturday's run was 5 miles.  I think the longest I had run prior was 3 and I felt so not ready to run 5.  I told her I would try and we both ran twice around Staring Lake.  We were overjoyed.  We couldn't beleive we ran 5 whole miles.  This was 2 girls that started out not being able to run a full mile!  Since then we have both run laps around that 5 miles (Nikki a few more laps), but it has to start somewhere.

Its crazy to think that 5 miles used to be my go-to run.  I would just go out twice a week and run 5 miles like it was no bit deal.  I am sure I'll get there again, but it still feels a long way off.

One thing that I love about having to start all over after post-pregnancy and post-Rory is that each Saturday's run is exciting.  It might not be the first time I have run that distance, but its the first time since I had a baby.  And thats something too!

Here's my training plan for the 10 mile.  It might change a bit by October.  I just added intervals because I want to get FASTER!  Nothing crazy, maybe just closer to an 11 minute mile for now.  Yesterday I ran 3 miles with an 11:45 pace so its definitley feasible.

I have always run to run.  I try not to think of it as a way to lose weight but instead as the weight loss as an added bonus.   I want running to be fun and challenging, but the second I make it about losing weight then it gets frustrating.  Well, in 5.5 weeks since I started running regularly I have lost 7lbs.  I am pretty excited about that.  Hoping to lose another 12 by race day!

Bottle-Free House Coming Soon

Yesterday was a big milestone for Rory.  It was her first day ever, in her whole almost 12 months of life, that she did not have a bottle.  She had only sippy cups all day!

One of the many one year old transitions that I wanted to work on was to get her off botlles and exclusively on sippys and it looks like that might actually happen with a couple weeks to spare.

Its a little bit of a struggle to get her to finish the sippy when its all formula, but she is getting better and better at it!

I must admit I am excited to no longer have to hand wash bottles!  For some reason throwing sippys in the dishwasher just makes my life so much easier.

Milk

I am so bummed.  I have tried to transition Rory to milk and it has gone horribly bad.  She drinks it just fine, thats not the problem.  I actually think she prefers the tast of milk to formula - who wouldn't, formula is nasty.  But it does a number on her digestive system!

Last week we were up to 12oz of milk and only 8oz of formula.  But she was very uncomfortable and ended up getting the worst diaper rash ever.  She had these nasty poops that were just causing her to feel bad all the time.  So we stopped the milk and about 3 days later she was all better.

I thought that we would try again and this time just work milk in much slower.  I was thinking that maybe I had gone to fast.  But even 1oz today caused her to have some stomach issues.  So I am done with milk for now.

I am hoping this is just a stage but I would be very sad if she had milk sensitivity.  Not surprised because Tim could never drink a glass of milk, but defnitly sad.  She has never had a problem with yogurt or cheeses so hopefully its just breaking down the proteins in milk that is the issue.

Rory has her 1 year checkup on 9/18 so I am going to wait until then to see what our next steps are.  They will probably want me to move her to either Soy or Rice milk instead of formula.   Anyone have an opinion on which is better?  Bummer.

Rory's New Radio Flyer Wagon!

We got a huge package on our doorstep!  Ok, I probably should have waited till Rory's birthday to open the box, but when I saw that it said Radio Flyer on the side I just could not wait!  Don't worry, when Rory is older I'll make her wait till her birthday to open gifts.  I promise.  So not fair I know!

Rory's first ride in her new wagon was so much fun!  She pretty much giggled the whole time. I think she felt like such a big girl!  When we went over big curbs and she bounced around a lot she held on and laughed, she thought it was hilarious!

Thank You Caleb!  And make sure to thank you parents too!  We are so lucky and grateful for the job that made Amy travel to crazy parts of of the midwest and reunited Amy and I!  Love the Alexander family!  So excited to celebrate Rory's birthday with them!
