Easter Weekend

Easter weekend began with blueberry and banana pancakes on Friday night.  They were a complete failure, fortunately Rory didn't care as long as the pancakes were shaped like Minnie Mouse!  (She ate the banana mouth before I could even get my camera out).

Saturday we went to the Afternoon with the Bunny in our local community center.  Last year we loved this event, but this year not so much.  Turns out that last year was too busy so they required pre-registration this year and limited the participation...and cut back costs.  There was no live band which was the best part last year.  And no Easter egg hunt, but instead a scavenger hunt.  Rory had fun, but I think we'll try something different next year.

Rory got a purse and sunglasses and a few other things in the mail from Nanny!  She immediately had to wear the purse and sunglasses on Saturday.

I'm not exactly an Easter bunny expert, but in terms of creepiness, I feel like this one scores off the charts.  They eyes are just weird.  Not to mention that she couldn't see anything, the helper had to point out that Rory was standing next to her at one point.  Might be time to invest in a new costume community center.  Of course Rory doesn't care.  At point she did cut a whole line of kids, hug the Easter bunny, then run away.

Rory loved playing on stage with all the inflatable instruments.  And she changed out the color of her beads 8 times.  She also loved playing with the beach balls, and after a little encouragement played well kicking the ball back and forth with another kid.

After the Community Center, we went to the mall and Rory got to run around and play some more.

Sunday we came downstairs to a filled Easter basket and a new chair for Rors.  She loved both!  Tim did a great job filling the basket, this kid is truly excited when she gets new plates, bowls and silverware!  The big hit though was the egg shaped chapstick, she smelled like blueberry the rest of the day and her entire mouth area was a little shiny!

Perfect size for her right?

After eating some chocolate and cookies, we went to brunch.  Rory loved the idea of a buffet but once her plate was filled with food all she wanted to eat was the french toast.  We had a fun family brunch then headed to park to enjoy the beautiful weather.

We checked out a new park.  There was a teeter totter thing that Tim and I were on and we tried to get Rory to take a pic of us.  Here are the best 2 of the 15 she took...

Ha,  Hilarious.

We did get a family photo by balancing my phone on a toy tractor and setting a 15 second time. Which apparently is not long enough since Tim is fixing his shirt and I am crossing my legs.

Rory (and me) took a long nap after the park.  Then we played outside a ton.  Bubbles and golf and a nice long walk! (btw - never walk 3 miles in flip flops the week before a race)

Rory was excited that their were so many birds out so she asked me to take a picture of one.

And at the top of the hill we got what might be my favoritest picture of Rory and me ever!

Tim made an awesome dinner of ham, green beans and sweet potatoes!  Everything was delicious and I can't wait to eat it all again tonight.  I might even add some more marshmallows to the sweet pots!

And we had sprinkle egg-shaped cookies for dessert.  Overall a fantastic fun family weekend!

Monday Randomness

Life has been a bit busy the last week or so.  Tim is on a work trip, work is busier and half marathon training is at its peak.  So in the spirit of "somethings got to give" I have not been posting as much as I would like to.

I took the afternoon off Friday to get in my long run.  With Tim in Vancouver and then Costa Rica I was stressing about how to get in my last and most important long run.  I finally decided taking the time off was worth not dealing with the stress or splice runs together to get up to 13.

Turned out be an amazing run.  Up until the 3-4 mile mark I really wanted to turn around and go back home but after that I just cruised and enjoyed the run.  The PR I'm trying to beat in Nashville is 2:23.  On Friday I ran 13.12 miles with 2:15:11. so I would say I'm on my way.  My #1 goal is still to PR but I am going to push to try to beat 2:15 too.

This weekend Rory and I were on our own.  Saturday morning we headed over to Bed Bath and Beyond and Carters to do some shopping, then we went to my favorite place to eat - Whole Foods.  Rory got to pick out everything she wanted from the hot bar.  She loved that!

Sunday we went to the mall.  We got hot chocolate and she played at the play area for a long time.

This is what its like to shop with Rory...

We got some spring clothes for Rory and new sunglasses and a bathing suit.

Both afternoons I watched The Masters.  I tried to multi-task and play with Rory but it was hard.  I felt like splitting my attention meant I couldn't do either thing well.

She isn't really good at playing on her own for more then 10-15 minutes.  Which is probably my fault.  But I feel bad when I'm not sitting on the floor playing with her and giving her my full attention.  I try really hard not to be distracted  around her or if I am I explain why and make it for a short period of time, like making dinner or writing an email.

But... its The Master's, so what are you going to do.  We did talk a lot about the golf and I tried to explain it a bit.  She would ask questions and watch it for a few minutes then want to do something else.

Here are some of the questions Rory asked during the golf... Why does he only wear one glove? Why did he hit the ball?  Where did he hit the ball?  Why is the ball by the trees?  Where did Bubba go?  Why is his name Bubba?  Are Bubba and GMike there?  (a little confusion between my Mom, Bubba and 2-time Master Champion Bubba Watson).  Can we go play golf?  Why is there water?  Why do you like golf?

So after Bubba (Watson) won we did whatever Rory wanted (Mommy guilt), which was lot of cuddling on the couch and watching TV and an extra long bath with bubbles.  She really wanted her feet in this photo.

Happy

One thing about Rory... she is such a happy kid.  Its contagious.  She laughs and laughs and laugh some more.  I know some of this is Rory just being a kid, and I love that.  But I can't help but think that some of it is her personality, and I love that even more.  She is so much fun to be around and can flip my mood in minutes.  She makes so happy.

I'm not being Pollyanna here, of course she has her frustrating, crying for no reason moments but overall she is just a happy person.  Everything is more fun with Rory!

This sounds like an Ad for Rory, maybe I should rent her out to people who need a little pick-me-up!

Things that motivate me to run...

The 15 things that motivate me to start running and keep running!  In no particular order...

1. My current desktop

2. Food - My favorite thing to do on a Friday is to go over to the Whole Foods hot bar and Carb load for my Saturday long runs!  The truth is that I love to eat.  And running lets me eat more!

3. The feeling at the end of a long run!  This was after my 12 mile run a week ago.  Even though you can't tell, I'm actually jumping.

4. Getting Faster - I'm never going to be a super speedy runner but I'm working toward mid-10/low-10 pace.  No matter the number, its fun to push for it and see the progress.  Its all about setting goals, achieving them, then resetting your goals!

   My 5 mile paces:
   2/2 11:03
   3/17 10:29
   3/25 10:14
   4/1 9:56

5.  Reaching for a new PR!  I want to beat this!

6. Running Shoes - I am obsessed with my Newtons!  I have the Lady Isaacs now which is a beginner Newton shoe.  I went years wearing Nike Structures and then tried a Brooks Adrenaline before finding these.  I have not run a race in them yet but so far I love them.  I would like to transition to a bigger lug or get a Newton trail shoe for my Tough Mudder training next.

7. Running Clothes - My favorites (right now): Victoria Secret Sports Underwear, Under Armour Protegee Sports Bra, Champion fitted pants, Nike or UA short sleeve running shirts, Smart Wool socks (I've tried the toe ones but not sure on them yet - yes, yes I know that I have one too many toes for them but I make it work), Pro Compression Calf Sleeves, Lululemon scarf for cold weather, BondiBand headbands (they keep my earbuds in my ears) and my new FitMark gym bag!

8. GU - I'm obsessed with Peanut Butter GU (Thanks Nikki!) and I may have ordered a 24 pack last week that showed up on my doorstep just in time for my 12 mile run!

9. Running Blogs - I read a lot of running blogs.  My favorites are Run Eat Repeat and The Hungry Runner Girl and Shut Up and Run.  I read running blogs everyday.  They really do motivate me.  I see these girls running a gazillion miles at gazelle speeds and I want to go faster and longer.  I'll never be a marathon runner or a gazelle but I like the inspiration!  Some the the runners on these blogs have kids and jobs and husbands to balance with running just like me, I love to see how others balance it all!

10. Being Healthy for me! - I just realized my headband was upside down.  And I ran 12 miles like that.  Ha.

I wish I could say that a healthy heart and healthy lungs were all I cared about.  But the truth is the number on the scale is still important to me, and I think it will be till I reach the goal number in my head.  I like to think that although I may be 20lbs overweight I am still healthy, and maybe even healthier then someone with a perfect BMI who does not workout.  For some reason I find comfort in that.

11. Being Healthy for my Family!

Look - she wants to be just like me!  CMM shirt from last year, my keys and my gym card.  After this photo she said "Mommy, you go home and nap.  I'll stay at the gym and go to yoga and run."  (Sounds kind of amazing btw.) My only hope is that some of my athletic energy rubs off on Rory and she also has a joy for being active!

For as long as I live I want to be healthy.  I fully realize there are aspects of that I cannot control, but there are also aspects I can.  And being the control freak that I am, I am going to try!  This little girl deserves that!
Tim and Rory both deserve to have the best version of me.  And a healthy active Erica is a happier, less stressed, better Mom, Better Wife Erica!

12.  Being Outside - There is nothing better for the soul then an hour or two watching trees pass with the sun is beating down on your face.

13. Race Photos!  Not kidding. One of my favorite things about race day is trying to think of the most outrageous thing to do for the camera!

14.  Runcations - A few photos from Nashville last year.  I want to go every year forever!

And 2 Nikki Runcations is not enough! So there will be more - may be 2, 3, 4 years from now - but there will be more!

15. Medals!  They are so shiny and pretty!

I have not always been a runner.  There was a day when I could not run a full mile or even a half mile.  But I set my mind to run a 5K and persistence and stubbornness slowly turned into a love for running.  Before I knew it I was running 4 miles, then 5 and a 10K and halfs.  And look at all the pretty medals I've earned from all that running!  I can't wait to add another Half Marathon medal to this collection in 3 weeks!
